What is 3K carbon fiber?
Before understanding carbon fiber cloth and prepreg, let’s first take a look at what is 3K carbon fiber? 3K carbon fiber is a type of carbon fiber tow. It is relatively difficult to prepare and can be produced in large quantities. Therefore, it is the main source of ordinary carbon fiber.
Carbon fiber tows are divided into 1K, 3K, 6K, 12K, 24K and 48K. K represents a bundle of carbon fiber containing 1,000 monofilaments, 1K carbon fiber refers to a bundle containing 1,000 monofilaments; 3K contains 3,000 monofilaments, and so on. Carbon fiber tows can be divided into small tows and large tows. Small tows below 12K are more suitable for high-end fields such as aerospace, while large tows of 24K and above are more suitable for civilian fields.
What is carbon fiber cloth?
Carbon fiber cloth is actually a material made of carbon fiber filaments woven by a machine according to certain rules. It is also called carbon cloth. The shapes of carbon fiber cloth include non-grain, horizontal grain, twill and satin grain, which are different appearance effects brought by different weaving methods. Carbon fiber cloth is a form of carbon fiber with very low density but high strength, inheriting all the advantages of carbon fiber.
What is carbon fiber prepreg?
Carbon fiber prepreg is a composite material formed by fully impregnating carbon fiber filaments with resin. Carbon fiber serves as reinforcement and resin serves as matrix. Carbon fiber prepreg is more stable in appearance than carbon fiber cloth, but is still relatively soft. Carbon fiber prepreg can be layered multiple times and at multiple angles, and then solidified into strong carbon fiber products. This is also a common way to make carbon fiber products.
Carbon fiber prepreg is not the same as carbon fiber cloth. In terms of performance, carbon fiber cloth is better, but in terms of stability, carbon fiber prepreg is better. In terms of application scope, carbon fiber prepreg has greater and broader potential.
