Common polishing methods for carbon fiber surfaces

Polishing refers to the process of using mechanical, chemical, or electrochemical methods to reduce the roughness of the workpiece surface and obtain a bright and flat surface.

2.1

The first method: rough polishing of carbon fiber surface

For carbon/carbon fiber composite plates, cast iron discs or polishing wheels with less fuzz can be used for rough polishing. The polishing surface of carbon fiber board needs to be parallel to the polishing disc or polishing wheel, and attention should be paid to placing it stably and maintaining a balanced force with the polishing disc. When polishing, attention should be paid not to excessive pressure. Slowly move from the center to the edge, and gradually move from the edge to the center at the end. The pressure should gradually decrease. The humidity of the polishing disc has a significant impact on the surface quality of the carbon fiber board. During rough polishing, water cooling is required to maintain the best evaporation of the water film on the surface of the carbon fiber board within 1-5 seconds after polishing, and the polishing time can be controlled within 2-5 minutes. The mark of qualified polishing of carbon fiber board is that all scratches on the surface have disappeared. After polishing, water or a solution containing cleaning agent can be used for cleaning.

The second method is carbon fiber surface polishing

The process of precision polishing carbon fiber products usually starts with 2.5 μ Sprinkle the mixture of M diamond and stone on a medium level woolen cloth, add suitable emulsion lubricant, and polish in a polishing machine with a speed ratio of 200-250r/min for 2-3 minutes until all scratches caused by rough polishing are removed.

Continue with 1 μ M Alumina trioxide polishing: distribute the aluminum trioxide mixture evenly on the Plush velvet cloth, and polish it with appropriate lubricant.

The polishing time is about 3-5 minutes, and the polishing machine speed is 100-150 r/min. After polishing, clean the test piece with tap water or an aqueous solution containing cleaning solution.

Finally, the metallographic analysis specimen should be bright and traceless after precise polishing. When viewed under a 100x microscope, no small scratches can be seen, and there is no trailing condition. Only when the porosity is thoroughly presented and the true appearance is reflected can it be obtained. If it does not meet the requirements, it should be polished again.

The purpose of polishing is to make the appearance of carbon fiber products more noble and beautiful, but the premise is that the overall performance cannot be sacrificed.
