What is the difference between aramid fiber and carbon fiber?

Table of Contents

1. Different application fields

Carbon fiber is a new type of fiber material with a carbon content of more than 95%. Carbon fiber is called “black gold”, which shows that its value and price are very high. It is mainly used in aerospace, national defense and military industries. With the increase in the production capacity of large tow carbon fiber, there are more and more applications in industrial manufacturing and civil fields. .

Aramid fiber is a new type of synthetic fiber, which is essentially different from carbon fiber. Aramid fiber also has the characteristics of high strength and high modulus, and is also very good in high temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, etc. It is often used in bulletproof products, construction materials, special protective clothing and electronic equipment.

2. Different mechanical properties

The tensile strength of T300 carbon fiber is 3000MPa, the elastic modulus is 225GPa, the elongation at break is 1.7%, and the density is 1.7g/cm^3. The performance of T1000 carbon fiber is higher than that of T300. In addition, there are high modulus and high strength and high modulus. 2 series of carbon fiber with wider performance range.

The tensile strength of the aramid fiber is 2815MPa, the elastic modulus is 126GPa, the elongation at break is 2.5%, and the density is 1.44g/cm^3. The impact resistance of aramid fiber is very good, and the elongation rate is relatively high. In terms of mechanical properties, carbon fiber has a higher upper limit, especially in terms of strength and modulus.

3. Different thermal stability

Aramid fiber has good thermal stability. Under the action of high temperature, it will not deform until it is decomposed. It can be used at 180 ° C for a long time. After a week of action at 150 ° C, the strength and modulus will not decrease. Also, its coefficient of thermal expansion is -2×10^-6. Compared with aramid, the thermal stability of carbon fiber is also superior, and the thermal expansion coefficient is smaller than that of aramid, which is -1.4×10^-6.

4. Different thermochemical properties

The chemical properties of carbon fiber are similar to carbon, except that it can be oxidized by strong oxidants, it is inert to general alkali. When the temperature in the air is higher than 400 °C, significant oxidation occurs and CO is generated. Carbon fiber has good corrosion resistance to general organic solvents, acids and alkalis, does not swell or swell, has outstanding corrosion resistance, and has no rust problem at all. Aramid fiber has good resistance to media, and generally has strong resistance to neutral chemicals, but it is easily eroded by various acids and alkalis, especially strong acids, and its water resistance is not good.
