Carbon fiber winding process

Table of Contents

Carbon fiber winding is a continuous molding method of composite materials. The basic method is to wind continuous fibers or cloth tapes soaked in resin glue on a core mold according to a certain rule, and then solidify and demold into composite products. This method is mainly used to manufacture products with rotationally symmetrical shapes such as circular pipes, pressure tanks, and storage tanks. Its characteristics are that the molding process is continuous and completed at one time; the shape and size of the product can be guaranteed, and the strength in the diameter direction is high. However, special winding machines and auxiliary equipment are required, and the production cost is relatively high.

Future is an excellent enterprise producing carbon fiber products. It has complete equipment, rich experience and strong qualifications, and is very mature in carbon fiber winding technology. According to the basic physical and chemical state of the resin during carbon fiber winding, our company can be divided into three types: wet winding, dry winding and semi-dry winding.

1.Dry winding

Dry winding is to use prepreg yarn or tape treated with prepreg, which is softened by heating on a winding machine to a viscous flow state and then wound onto a mandrel. Since the prepreg yarn (or tape) is professionally produced, the resin content (accurate to within 2%) and the quality of the prepreg yarn can be strictly controlled. Therefore, dry winding can accurately control product quality. The biggest features of the dry winding process are high automation procedures, high production efficiency, winding speed up to 100-200m/min, clean winding machine, good labor hygiene conditions and high product quality. The disadvantage is that the winding equipment is expensive, the prepreg yarn manufacturing equipment needs to be increased, and the investment is large. In addition, the interlaminar shear strength of dry wound articles is low.

2.Semi-dry winding

The semi-dry winding method is to add a set of drying equipment to remove the solvent in the dipped yarn after the fiber is dipped and on the way to the core mold. Compared with the dry method, the pre-dipping process and equipment are omitted; and Compared with the wet method, the air bubble content in the product can be reduced.

3.Wet winding

Wet winding is to directly wind the fiber bundle (yarn tape) onto the core mold under tension control after dipping. The advantages of wet winding are as follows.

a. The product has good air tightness, because the winding tension makes the excess resin glue squeeze out the air bubbles and fill the gaps;

b. The cost is 40% lower than dry winding;

c. When wet winding, the resin glue on the fiber can reduce fiber abrasion;

d. The parallelism of fiber arrangement is good;

e. High production efficiency (up to 200m/min).

Among the above three types of winding, wet winding is the most common application; dry winding is only used in high-performance, high-precision aerospace high-end technical fields.
